Ragheb Esfahani is a known figure to scholars in various fields of Islamic sciences. He has become famous because of his insignificant works in the fields of Quranic sciences, Gharib al-Quran, ethics and Arabic literature. In addition to these works, he has a well-known Tafsir book which, except for its famous prologue, was not available to the interested people until the early of the past decade. This book was a reference to the great Tafsirists such as al-Baydawi. The published part of this Tafsir book well represents its significance. The distinguishing features of this work are the detailed discussions of terminology and signs, Ragheb’s competence in combining different opinions and thoughts, his special tolerance in Kalām discussions, and the reference to the opinions of Tafsirists of the fourth century and earlier. The ambiguities about the date of his death and his religion are also included in this book.
